Kelela is back with another track, “Rewind”, that is reminiscent of 90’s R&B. I’m looking forward to the new album Hallucinogen. The album is a follow up to her debut project, Cut 4 Me.

Kelela X Tink “Want It”

From SoundCloud

“Want It” is a collaboration between Kelela, @Tink_g , and @dj-dahi-1, and the latest in Yours Truly (@yourstrulysf) and adidas originals #songsfromscratchseries.

New Music: Bok Bok ft. Kelela “Melba’s Call”

Los Angeles-based R&B singer Kelela slayed the end of 2013 with her Fade To Mind-released mixtape CUT 4 ME.  You can thank some of the grime-infused production on tracks “Guns and Synth” and “A Lie”, to Night Slugs member Bok Bok.

Now, the British producer has brought Kelela in to collab with him for the lead single from his upcoming EP due out this spring. He’s experimented with vox before, but with “Melba’s Call,” it’s the first time he’s used full vocals.

Kelela Drops New Song “The High”

Kelela the high

Kelela has wasted no time keeping a fresh supply of good music. I still can’t get enough of her 2013 mixtape CUT 4 ME , and now she’s handed out a brand new single “The High”.

Later this year, Kelela plans on traveling to the U.S. for her first headlining shows in New York and Los Angeles. She’ll also be performing at SXSW in March. Those show dates, along with ticket info, are listed below.

03/12-03/14 Austin, TX @ SXSW Shows
04/02 Los Angeles @ The Echo
04/03 Brooklyn, NY @ Rough Trade NYC

Stream: Nguzunguzu Skycell

I don’t have the slightest clue how to pronounce Nguzunguzu and couldn’t spell it correctly without good old copy and paste, but I know that this producer duo has won me over as a fan.  They had a hand in the production on 90’s R&B influenced nostalgic yet modern singer Kelela’s latest project Cut 4 Me, giving us those humming 808’s and downbeat-yet-danceable beats with a tribal underlay we’ve all come to love from the project. They now have their own beat tape, Skycell, that is out today on Fade To Mind, and you can expect that same hypnotic sound that just takes over your body and gets you moving. On this project the beats are a little more upbeat and grungier but you’ll love it just the same.

You can stream “Mecha” from from the project below, and head over to Pitchfork to stream the entire EP for free.

Skycell Tracklist:

01. Foam Feathers
02. Harp Bell
03. Vision of Completion
04. Break In
05. Tumultuous
06. Mecha
07. Skycell

Kelela cut 4 me mixtape cover

Listening to Kelela takes me back to the days when  artists like Ghost Town DJ and INOJ were booming in my stereo speakers. I was about ten or eleven when these groups infiltrated the air waves, so I was too young to enjoy them at a house party or club. Regardless, tracks like “My Boo” and “Shorty Swing My Way” are still in heavy rotation for me almost two decades later. Kelela’s newest mixtape Cut 4 Me conjures up that nostalgic feeling I get from 90’s R&B but also makes a sound of her own. She has a smoother, abmient way about her but it still has that bounce that I love. The slower tempo of her songs won’t stop DJ’s worldwide from having a field day making them into more up tempo party-ready tracks. Stream and download Cut 4 Me below.
